ACCESS Program For Women in Science and Mathematics

Each year, the ACCESS program offers approximately 40 women some extraordinary opportunities and experiences in science and mathematics at the University of Utah.

Introduction

ACCESS

ACCESS exists to increase the number of women in science and mathematics. A typical ACCESS student will attend a seven-week, integrated science course designed specifically for the ACCESS program during the summer of her freshman year at the University of Utah. The student is introduced to hands-on experiences with real-world problems through instruction, laboratory work and teamwork on assigned projects. Different subjects are taught each week by faculty from the four departments in the College of Science. Students will be graded on weekly lab reports, written with their group (averaging three people).

During the spring semester, each student will be placed in one of hundreds of research laboratories available across campus, based on interest. Throughout the ACCESS year, students will participate in a number of meetings to discuss their experiences and engage in science-oriented activities.

Benefits

  1. $3,500 award that will not conflict with most University scholarships.
  2. Integrated summer science course designed to introduce you to faculty, facilities and laboratory techniques in biology, chemistry, mathematics and physics.
  3. Research laboratory placement for one semester of your freshman year.
  4. Networking with current and former ACCESS students and university researchers.
  5. A jump start on your college experience, familiarizing yourself with the campus and its services.
  6. Prestigious housing opportunity in the Gary and Ann Crocker Science House on Officers Circle, Fort Douglas.

How To Apply

Applications will be available at high school counseling centers or from high math and science teachers in mid-December. Applications are also available online at the College of Science website.
